Postnatal Emotional Wellbeing

This course is aimed at those experiencing anxiety and or depression in the post-natal period. It will help participants to understand more about the unique experience of becoming a parent, the reasons why anxiety and depression are so prevalent in this group and ways of overcoming their difficulties. Using primarily CBT (but also drawing on ACT and CFT principles), the course will target unhelpful thoughts and behaviours, rumination and worry, and encourage self-compassion and alternative ways of coping.


  • Baby up to the age of 1
  • Low risk
  • Presentation of depression or anxiety or both
  • OCD presentation if it is short-term i.e. 1st episode in the postnatal period. Please consider whether 1:1 work would be more beneficial if their primary focus is the OCD
  • The course content is aimed at the main or birthing parent

Not suitable for:

  • Patients presenting with PTSD
  • High or unstable risk
  • Patient’s whose main concern is around bonding
  • Those also receiving input from secondary care services
  • Due to the therapeutic nature of the group, partners are not invited to attend

All participants to be screened for suitability beforehand

Session 5 – Our relationship with our thoughts
Session 6 – Experimenting with our thoughts
Session 7 – Putting it all together


Session 1: Understanding PTSD, PTSD and the brain, grounding techniques
Session 2: Psychoeducation on anxiety and managing the physical symptoms of anxiety. Introducing safe place imagery
Session 3: How to manage flashbacks and dissociation
Session 4: Understanding and re-scripting nightmares and the use of compassion focused techniques
Session 5: Understanding low mood/depression, breaking free from rumination and how to maintain progress
